Five reasons NOT to migrate to the USA
I’ve lived in the Philippines since birth. The only times I’ve left this country are the times I went on a vacation or traveled for work. I’ve been to the US about 4 or 5 times. Vacations allow me and my family to experience life in America, usually for two to three weeks at a time. It’s always fun to go, especially since we don’t get to do it that often.
Several times, I’ve asked myself if life in America is for me. All those times, I’ve told myself, NO. There are many things about this country that makes me admire it and the people living there. The discipline, the order, the retail industry and what not. But I’ve weighed the pros and cons and I’ve always chosen to stay where I am.
Why?
1 – Inexpensive labor.
It’s probably the only place in the world where paying for household help doesn’t cause a major dent on the wallet. I come home from a long and stressful day at work and I only have to worry about my children and how to spend the rest of our waking hours. It’s the only place I know where I can indulge in little luxuries on a regular basis. These things, I need, to preserve my sanity!
2 – Financial independence, a reason no more.
The US economy has been in a slump for quite sometime now. So the financial perks of living there, no longer exist as much as they did years ago. I’d rather stay here and have a solid support system around like family and friends.
3 – Crime
I never fail to read the news, local and international. I don’t see any difference in the crime trends here and in America. In fact, I’m more scared of the kind of crimes that exist there.
4 – Weather
It’s weird enough nowadays, with global warming and all. But I’d rather deal with typhoons than add tornadoes, hail storms and the like.
5 – The absence of a support system
I’ve always had very close familial ties. Leaving the Philippines would also mean, leaving my immediate family behind. It’s never an easy thing to do for anyone. I belong to a very small family and therefore, find it hard to imagine myself anywhere else.
Is life in America for you? It could be, but not for me.
