Overseas Jobs For Filipinos

Dubbed as modern day heroes, overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) bring in much needed revenue into the country. Their dollar remittances help the Philipine government elevate the economic status of the country.

All about the OFW

OFWs refer to Filipinos employed in other countries such as the United States, Middle East countries, European and Asian countries. They have decided to leave the Philippines to undertake jobs with salaries exceeding what they usually earn in the country.

OFWs are engaged in a variety of jobs abroad. OFWs are employed in other countries as nurses, doctors, IT professionals, entertainers, teachers, engineers, architects, technicians, and many more. Some of these professionals and skilled workers have become permanent residents of their chosen destinations.

Why work abroad?

Many Filipinos are choosing to leave the country to find jobs abroad for varied reasons.

The most common and prevalent reason Filipinos look for employment abroad has to do with economic and financial considerations. All OFWs agree that they won’t earn the amount they’re earning abroad if they just stay and work in the Philippines. With the foreign exchange rates that favor the economies of first world countries, Filipinos see the employment opportunities abroad as their means to reach greener pastures. Earning in a currency that has more value than the Philippine peso is enticing to some Filipinos.

To be with family members and relatives who have immigrated to other country is another reason why some Filipinos opt to become OFWs. They choose to work in a country where some of their family members and relatives reside.

How do you get an OFW job?

If finding a job in the Philippines is challenging, getting an OFW job can be a daunting task especially if you have no idea on how to go about the process.

  • Before you embark on job hunt for work abroad, you must make sure that you have all the documents that you need. You must have an authenticated birth certificate, a National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) clearance, an authenticated transcript of academic records, a comprehensive resume, and a valid passport. Once you have these important documents, you can start job hunting.
  • Check out international online job postings. Most companies who seek employees from other countries have international job listings. Find the one that best fits your qualifications and experience.
  • Send in your application, resume, and supporting documents to your potential employer through email or post depending on the instructions of the employer.
  • If you would rather seek the assistance of a job placement or recruitment agency, ensure that the agency is licensed by the Philippine Overseas Employment Agency (POEA).
  • Make sure that the agency has the job order for the position that you’re applying for. Don’t fall for the promises of incoming job orders. Ensure that your recruitment agency already has the job order that suits your qualifications.
  • Don’t pay more than the allowed placement fee and always ask for an official receipt. Check with the POEA regarding the standard rates of placement fees.
  • Deal only with the authorized representative of the licensed recruitment agency. Always ask for identification when dealing with people in the recruitment agency.
  • Don’t settle for a tourist visa when your agency promised you a working visa. A tourist visa will not allow you to engage in any jobs abroad.
  • Best of all, never deal with fixers. Besides the fact that fixers charge more than the standard rates, there is no guarantee, however, that fixers will get the job done quickly.
