Pinoys making lots of dollars with Online Poker

Poker is a a craze that is quickly spreading through the Philippines.  Facebook’s Zynga Poker Room is always packed with Pinoys looking to sharpen their online poker skills.  What’s not to like?  Online poker can yield THOUSANDS of dollars in a mere few hours.  Indeed, a few good games can yield enough dollars that, when converted to pesos, would be enough to fund the rest of your year without working.  Maximum reward, little effort, right?  Not so fast.  Here’s some important things to keep in mind when exploring online poker as a way for pinoys to MAKE MONEY ONLINE.

Poker is not considered gambling. Unlike Blackjack where you win or lose money based solely on the hand you are dealt, poker lets you bluff your way into winning.  Simply put, even the best winning hands can turn out losers in the hands of a weak and indecisive player.  Conversely, even if luck gave you really bad cards, you can still manage to win big if you are able to convince the other players to give up the hand (fold).  Poker is a game of SKILL.  Skill games are not considered gambling.

Your ability to make money depends on your ability to BET properly. Even if you have an A A or “pocket rockets” –the best combination of starting cards in Texas Holdem, you can still LOSE.  Why?  Because you didn’t bet properly.  The proper beting strategy makes weak hands look like winners–thereby scaring the possibly winning hands into folding.  It also means betting low at first, if you have a killer hand, to draw your opponents to bet bigger and bigger amounts.  Once the final card is revealed, you then unload a huge bet.  This insures a large pot for you to win.

Be aware of and be careful of Poker Gangs. Based on some forum posts, there’s many groups of friends that would pack poker rooms and bet in such a way as to make a target bet a lot.  Be aware of these tricks.  The dead giveaway is the betting pattern.  Pay attention to who keeps raising the pot. Be prepared to fold even if you think you have a decent hand.  Don’t be ensnared into this.

Don’t be afraid to jump around poker rooms. If you feel that a person in your current room is too skilled, don’t hesitate to jump rooms.

Hot streaks are mental. If you feel yourself having a lucky streak, keep betting maximum if you have at least a decent opening hand.  There’s no luck involved–only the psychological dynamics present in your opponents.
