Tips for OFWs on How to Invest their Money in the Philippines

Filed under money saving tips, February 21st, 2010 by Opportunity Lister

Many Overseas Filipino Workers or OFWs have spend a decade or more far away from their friends and families in order to earn enough money for their loved ones. Because of this, some of them have saved enough money to be considered as a potential capital for a local business or investment back in the Philippines. If you have been working for years as an OFW, here are some investing tips worth checking out:

Investing in a small business

Investing in a small business is definitely a good idea, especially if you wish to retire in the Philippines and still have a steady source of income. As you try to save money for a local business, you can attend business seminars or livelihood classes to get extra training. If you want to open a jewelry business once you come back to the Philippines for good, take jewelry-making and basic business management classes. You can also try to join legit business communities based in the Philippines to gain some insight on other possible lucrative options for your hard-earned savings.

If you think your earnings are not enough for your business plans, you can team up with a friend who’s also an OFW. With your combined earnings, you can probably go for bigger investments that can offer bigger revenues.

Stock options for OFWs

Investing in equities such as common and preferred stocks is another possible option for OFWs who want to watch their hard-earned savings grow over time. However, keep in mind that investing in stocks, just like any business venture, has certain risks. Before you go into this, you should have basic knowledge on the Philippine stock market on how it actually works.

Other options for OFWs are government securities. These are considered as free of risk because they are guaranteed by the local government. The government treasury and the agencies under it are the ones who issue these government securities. Investing in mutual funds is also a suggested strategy. These are investment tools that allow people with similar business objectives to pool their money together and invest in several options. Asset Management Companies or AMCs are the ones who handle mutual funds.

When planning to invest your hard-earned money, keep in mind that any investment strategy involves some sort of risk. Before you do some investing, assess first your capacity to handle financial risks. You can also get professional help from a stock broker or financial consultant. Whatever type of investment you wish to enter, prepare by arming yourself with the right information. Always remember that financial literacy is a very important characteristic of a wise investor. Keep these tips in mind and you are sure to make better decisions when it comes to investing your money and providing a stable source of income for yourself and your family throughout the years.
